Friends + Family:
As many of you know Tyson has been in ICU since late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. I want you to know that we are still in ICU while he recovers. He is staying strong and seems to be bouncing back slowly. Thank you all for your heartfelt prayers, love, and good vibes sent our way as we work through this. Please keep them coming ♥️
As I mentioned, the doctors discovered a very large blood clot and several small clots in his lungs. What they also found were non-occlusive clots in his upper arm around his PICC (his IV line in his arm through which we administer his hydration and some medications). These types of blood clots (pulmonary embolisms) are extremely dangerous and can be fatal because they block blood flow to the lungs. Since his oxygen saturation was dangerously low, he was put on oxygen straight away. They also started him on blood thinners which will prevent new clots from forming and help break up the existing ones. His body will also naturally absorb the clots over time.
They are also treating him for bacterial pneumonia. The doctors ran into an issue with this initially, as they found they were dealing with a drug resistant bacteria. This is likely an unfortunate side effect of his long history of antibiotic treatments for the Lyme infection. They were able, however, to find an antibiotic that could take care of it. Scans done yesterday show that the infection is barely visible at this point.
Given the amount of stress his body was under from the low levels of oxygen and the elevated heart rate, it would have been no surprise if his heart showed signs of stress. The echo cardio gram, however, showed that his heart is “picture perfect”.
Tyson has been able to wean off of the 1-3 liters of oxygen they were giving him and he’s now back on room air like he was previously. They’ve adjusted the settings to his vent to help control his co2 levels. Right now they’re looking into getting us a device that can be added to his vent circuit that can monitor his co2’s since that’s one of the only critical things I currently have no way of checking at home.
Right now, Tyson is exhausted and dozing off a lot. It’s hard for me to see him like this but I’m doing everything I can to keep him calm and comfortable and relaxed. He has had moments where he’s seemed more alert these past couple of days. The staff here has been really incredible. They’re taking good care of him and they even got me a cot to sleep on in his room. One of my very closest friends lives near the hospital and has brought me dinners and coffees and fresh laundry all week ♥️ The boys are doing okay- however they do struggle a bit because they miss us and Calvin in particular is worried about his dad (Abren isn’t fully aware of the situation with Tyson but is missing us both terribly). I am hopeful that we will be able to head home soon but I don’t want to rush it- it’s important that we do this in a safe manner (meaning he’s showing that he is stable and needs very little intervention) so that we don’t have to rush back. This has been a scary and stressful few days and it’s highlighted just how delicate, complicated, and critical his situation is. It has been mentally and physically draining but that’s been the name of the game for the past eight years. We can get through this. Tyson is incredibly strong willed and resilient. ♥️🙏🏼
So please keep the prayers for his recovery coming and I will update soon.
Thank you,
Ann
